Estate Plan Readiness Checklist

Here are practical items to gather and think about before your consultation.

It may be worth discussing your options for a comprehensive estate plan with our attorney Vince S. Giarratano.

Family And Children

  • Choose who should care for your minor children if you could not.
  • Choose a backup caregiver in case your first choice cannot serve.
  • Decide who should manage money for your children.
  • Consider whether the caregiver and money manager should be the same person.

Home And Assets

  • List any real estate you own, including your home and other property.
  • Gather bank, investment, retirement, life insurance, and business information.
  • Review beneficiary forms so they match your current wishes.

Decision-Makers

  • Choose someone to help with finances if you cannot sign papers.
  • Choose someone to make healthcare decisions if needed.
  • Choose backup decision-makers.

Existing Documents

  • Locate any current will, trust, power of attorney, or healthcare directive.
  • Note when each document was signed.
  • Bring copies to your consultation.

Questions To Ask

  • Do I need a will, a trust, or both?
  • Can my family avoid court if something happens?
  • How should I plan for minor children?
  • Are my accounts and beneficiary forms coordinated?
